Luigi's Italian buffet - Four Points Sheraton, Dubai

When I heard that Luigi's had changed its concept from a la carte to buffet, I was sceptical - it is the usual concern that buffets water down the quality the dishes and that they tend to be more impersonal. Nonetheless, I tried it and was thankfully happily surprised!

Ambience
The restaurant is cosy and intimate with seating for around 40. Traditional Italian table cloths give it that Italian feel, while the entrance has some Italian products from tomatoes in a can to pastas add to the same. The choice of music, Pavarotti, a throwback to the past, was welcomed by this writer. It is simple - create an Italian mood by playing Italian music, but the romantic element in his music works well in Luigi's because it is such an intimate restaurant with romantic possibilities. Homely is the end result.

Service
Because the restaurant is so small, you really get to know the waiting staff, although I would like to see more natural engagement on their part - without prompting. Nonetheless, they were around without being obtrusive - another aspect of service that guests want.

Dishes

The buffet is not big, and this is why the buffet concept works here. One does not get lost with too many choices, while at the same time, there is enough variety to satisfy you. Risotto balls,  a selection of cold cuts (no pork), Veal Osso Buco, Mediterranean salmon, Lamb chops with rosemary and perfect for asparagus season, Balsamic glazed tomatoes and asparagus. But was is an Italian evening without pasta - they offer 6 different pastas made to order. However, if you prefer something else, they are happy to customise a dish for you. I did this and ordered Pepperoncini, a simple spaghetti pasta with olive oil, garlic and chili.

Finally, for dessert, you are spoiled for choice. A cheese board is an alternative to those who do not have a sweet tooth, but for those who love sweet things, look no further than the tiramasu, presented as a cake, rather than in the usual glass. Panna cotta and other classics were also part of the dessert.

Overall verdict

Luigi's offers a pleasant night out featuring some favourite Italian treats in an absolutely lovely setting. At 125AED for the soft drinks option (we were there on a  dry night), it offers tremendous value.

Disclaimer: I was at Luigi's as a guest of the hotel. I would like to think this diid not affect my judgement.
